| Q | I never received a Tax Notice can I pay without Penalty & Interest? |
| A | According to the Property Tax Code, failing to send or receive a tax bill does not affect the validity of the tax, penalty or interest due by an individual, the taxes, delinquency date, the existence of a tax lien, or any procedure the taxing unit institutes to collect the tax. The responsibility lies with the property owner to inquire as to taxes due on their property.back to top |

| Q | If I am Disabled or Over 65 and live on a fixed income is there a special payment plan for me? |
| A | Yes, homeowners that qualify for disabled or over 65 exemptions may pay the current taxes in four quarterly installments. The first installment must reach our office before February 1st with a request to apply for the installment agreement. The remaining payments are due before April 1st, June 1st and August 1st. There is no penalty or interest due unless an installment is not paid timely. Each late installment will accrue 6% penalty and 1% interest for each month delinquent.back to top |

| Q | Why do I have to pay school taxes if I do not have children in school? |
| A | School taxes are assessed to everyone who owns property within the districts boundaries and are set according to the appraised value of that property.back to top |

| Q | I am Over 65 years of age. Why do I still have to pay taxes? |
| A | The School District offers a Homestead and Over 65 exemption for those who qualify. If the value of your home is more than the amount of the exemptions applied you will pay taxes on the remainder.back to top |

| Q | I received a Tax Notice for a business I own but I do not own the building or land. Do I have to pay the taxes? |
| A | The taxes are based on value associated with the inventory, furniture, fixtures, machinery and or equipment used to run your business and not with the actual building or land value. You are liable for those taxes due if you were doing business on January 1st.back to top |

| Q | I received a Tax Notice for a business I sold or closed after Jan. 1st, am I liable for the taxes due for that year? |
| A | If you were doing business on the 1st day of the year you are liable for the taxes for the full year.
You must report the sale or closing of your business to Harris County Appraisal District in order to ensure the account is closed for the following year.back to top |

| Q | I am Disabled or Over 65 and not able to pay my taxes. Is my property subject to be sold by the tax office to pay for delinquent taxes? |
| A | Yes, unless you qualify your homestead for a Tax Deferral. However, your tax liability is only postponed and not canceled. Your delinquent taxes will continue to accrue interest at the rate of 8% per year once the deferral is granted. If a lawsuit has already been filed to collect delinquent taxes you will need to file a Tax Deferral Affidavit. | Q | The property next door to me has been abandoned. If I pay the delinquent taxes on the property will the property be mine? |
| A | No. You can certainly pay on anyone's delinquent taxes. However, that in itself will not make you the owner of the property. The property owner has certain rights that protect their interest in the property.back to top |

| A | Legal action will be taken against you to collect on the taxes due. That action may result in the sale of your property. If you owe delinquent taxes you should contact this office immediately.back to top |

| Q | Why are my taxes higher this year than last year? |
| A | There are several reasons your taxes may have increased. 1st, check your exemptions. Your exemptions may have been denied. You must contact Harris County Appraisal District for an explanation. 2nd check the Appraised Value. If your value has increased you must contact Harris County Appraisal District for an explanation. 3rd the tax rate may have increased. The current tax rate is stated on your tax notice.back to top |
